  • Inside Aery Aviation’s 4,250-Mile Critical Care Mission from LA to Cleveland

Inside Aery Aviation’s 4,250-Mile Critical Care Mission from LA to Cleveland

The call came into Aery Aviation’s 24/7 dispatch center from a Los Angeles hospital: a critically ill patient needed immediate transfer to Cleveland Clinic over 2000 miles away for specialized care unavailable anywhere on the West Coast. The patient was stable enough for transport, but only with continuous ICU-level medical support. Ground ambulance? Not feasible. Commercial aviation? Can’t accommodate critical care patients. The family needed an answer in minutes.

Within 90 minutes, Aery Aviation’s Learjet 45 — configured for advanced medical transport — was wheels-up from Los Angeles, bound for Ohio with a critical care patient, a flight nurse, a paramedic, and two ATP-rated pilots at the controls. This is what coast-to-coast critical care air ambulance service looks like when the operator has the aircraft, the crew, and the systems to execute.

Los Angeles to Cleveland — 2,073 Miles, Nonstop

When Aery Aviation’s dispatch team received the request, they began coordinating across multiple stakeholders simultaneously:

    1. The referring hospital in Los Angeles confirming patient acuity, required medical equipment, and ground ambulance transport to Van Nuys Airport.
    2. Cleveland Clinic’s case management team arranging bed availability, receiving team readiness, and ground transport from Burke Lakefront Airport.
    3. Critical care medical crew with a flight nurse and paramedic staffed to match the patient’s in-flight medical needs.
    4. Aery Aviation flight operations assigning the Learjet 45 (offering the range and medical configuration for a 2,073-mile patient-loaded nonstop flight), filing the IFR flight plan, and coordinating fuel services at both ends.
    5. Maintenance teams confirming the Learjet 45’s medical equipment was airworthy and mission-ready.

While the aircraft was being prepped on the ramp, the medical team prepared the patient for transport: IV lines secured, ventilator checked, monitoring equipment calibrated, medication protocols confirmed.

Once the patient was loaded and the medical team signaled ready, Pilot in Command Dan Haugh and Second in Command Thomas Salvatore, ATP-rated pilots with extensive critical care transport experience, departed Los Angeles. The flight crew maintained constant communication with ATC, monitored weather along the route, and coordinated arrival logistics with Cleveland Clinic. The medical team monitored the patient continuously, maintaining ICU-level care throughout the flight. The patient arrived safely at Cleveland Clinic.

Total distance: 4,250 miles round trip. Patient-loaded leg: 2,073 miles, nonstop.

How Aery Aviation Handles Coast-to-Coast Critical Care

Not every air ambulance can fly this distance with a patient onboard without refueling. Coast-to-coast critical care transport demands range, speed, and medical capability. Aery Aviation’s modified Learjet 45 delivers all three.

    Range: Coast-to-Coast Without Fuel Stops

The Learjet 45 has a maximum range of over 2,000 nautical miles, enough to fly from California to Ohio without stopping for fuel. For critical care patient transport, this is decisive. Refueling stops introduce delay, patient handling complications, and operational risk. A nonstop flight means the patient remains under continuous medical supervision in a controlled environment from departure to arrival.

    Speed: When Every Hour Matters

The Learjet 45 cruises at 465 knots (535 mph) with a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet. That combination of speed and altitude puts the aircraft above most weather and commercial traffic congestion. This Los Angeles-to-Cleveland mission took approximately four hours — a trip that would require over 40 hours by ground ambulance.

Medical Configuration: ICU-Level Care at 45,000 Feet

Aery Aviation’s Learjet 45 is configured for advanced medical care — not a retrofit, but a purpose-designed medical transport interior:

    • Stretcher platform with aviation-grade patient restraint systems
    • Medical power supply for ventilators, infusion pumps, monitoring equipment, and life support devices
    • Oxygen supply with redundant backup systems for extended flight duration
    • Storage for critical care medications, IV fluids, and emergency medical equipment
    • Seating for medical crew positioned for continuous patient access

Aery Aviation operates under FAA Part 135 air carrier certification and holds CAMTS accreditation — the highest standard in air medical transport. Aery is also ARG/US Gold rated and currently in the Platinum audit process.

The People Behind Aery Aviation’s Air Medical Missions

Aircraft capability is half the equation. Coast-to-coast critical care flights require trained professionals who execute under pressure with zero margin for error.

Every Aery Aviation pilot holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate — the highest level of FAA pilot certification. Flight crews undergo annual simulator training, exceed FAA currency requirements, and are type-rated in the specific aircraft they fly. They understand that critical care transport is a life-or-death operation where timing and precision are non-negotiable.

Behind every mission is Aery Aviation’s 24/7/365 dispatch team — aviation operations professionals who coordinate with hospital systems, insurance companies, and families. When the call comes in at 2 AM, the dispatch team is ready. Not on-call. Not forwarded to an answering service. Ready.

  • Aery Aviation Statement on FAA Notice of Administrative Disagreement

Aery Aviation strongly disputes the facts and circumstances regarding the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) notice of a proposed civil penalty concerning our 2021-2022 flight and ground operations related to our U.S. Navy contract supporting a U.S. Navy training mission.

Aery Aviation has always operated with a safety-first mindset and maintains the highest standards of operational discipline and regulatory compliance. We will vigorously defend our longtime record of exceeding safety standards while continuing to operate with the professionalism, transparency, and safety focus that our government and commercial partners expect. We are confident the administrative issue with the FAA will be resolved in our favor as we continue to work toward an enduring resolution.

Aery Aviation’s operations meet and exceed stringent safety and airworthiness requirements, including U.S. Navy Interim Flight Clearance (IFC) standards and DCMA 8210.1 airworthiness oversight—standards that go well beyond typical commercial aviation requirements. It is also subject to periodic safety reviews by both the FAA and separately by the U.S. Navy.

The FAA’s representations are factually incorrect and unrelated to Aery Aviation’s FAA Part 135 air carrier operations. This matter does not involve an accident, incident or any compromise of flight safety. Instead, it stems from a contract-specific administrative disagreement four years ago that Aery Aviation worked with FAA to resolve nearly three years ago. The issue is associated with the documentation and certification approach for mission-specific external pods used under a Navy contract performed by Strategic Airborne Operations JV, LLC, a joint venture established solely for that purpose. Aery’s engagement with the FAA was prompt and proactive, and enhanced procedures to address FAA’s questions were promptly implemented – procedures which have been followed through today. The aircraft in question were previously operated by a predecessor – on the same type of U.S. Navy contract, with the very same equipment installed – without FAA concern.

Aery Aviation is disputing the FAA understanding of the circumstances. Safety remains Aery Aviation’s highest priority. We are confident in both our technical and legal position, and we are addressing the matter through appropriate legal and regulatory channels. Our current fleet, crews, maintenance practices, and compliance systems continue to meet or exceed all applicable FAA requirements, and this matter has no impact on current operations or services provided to our customers.

Aery is happy to call Newport News its home for decades to come.”

The new construction will increase Aery’s overall capabilities and efficiency. The footprint and square footage of the new hangar tremendously increases the size of aircraft that can be worked on in the hangar. Aery’s manufacturing plant will be adjacent to the new facility increasing overall efficiency. The company’s expansion will also create 211 well-paid jobs with salaries averaging $85,000. “Aery is looking for engineers, pilots, mechanics,” continued Beale. “We start a lot of our folks out in an internship program as well as bring in folks who have decades of experience.

#future Would you like an exterior tour of our new 60,000 square foot hangar office building that is being built? This model- a magnificent surprise gift from James River Architects was presented to Aery Aviation’s owners during the groundbreaking event.
To put 60,000 square feet into perspective, that is more than 1.14 acres. A football field (with two end zones) is 57,600 square feet; excluding the end zones it is less than 50,000 square feet. So, the new building is larger than the playing area on a football field.

NEWPORT NEWS AEROSPACE COMPANY EXPANDING, ADDING MORE THAN 200 NEW POSITIONS
    by: Brian Reese, Aesia Toliver

    Posted: Sep 14, 2021 / 08:32 AM EDT / Updated: Sep 15, 2021 / 04:22 AM EDT

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News-based Aery Aviation is investing $15.3 million to expand its headquarters, which will bring more than 200 new jobs to the area.

“We’ve been dealing with COVID now for 18 months or so it’s been tough on our economy especially certain industries and to have jobs announcements like this will provide people with jobs and the ability to put food on their table,” sad Gov. Ralph Northam at the groundbreaking.

Executive Vice President Scott Beale says it’s an expansion that is set to create 211 well-paid jobs averaging a salary of $85,000. It also allows them to have their manufacturing plant adjacent to where the work is going on, making everything more efficient.

“We’re looking for engineers, mechanics, pilots and we start a lot of our folks out in the intern program through like the governor mentioned as well as bring in folks with decades of experience,” said Beale.

The aerospace company that provides services for both commercial businesses and the government will build a new 60,000 square-foot hangar facility with access to the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport runway. It will also have access to an engineering technology center to expand maintenance and modification services opportunities. They will be merging their five facilities already in Newport News into one.

“The footprint and the size what we can actually fit inside the hangar tremendously increases,” explained Beale.

“Hampton Roads’ rich history in aerospace and aviation provides an ideal backdrop for Aery Aviation to grow and become more successful than ever before,” said Northam. “The region is home to world-class higher education and research institutions that have helped to advance the aerospace industry. We look forward to supporting Aery Aviation as it enters into its next phase of growth here in the Commonwealth.”

The company was founded in 2016 and provides aerospace design, engineering, systems integration, modifications, certification, maintenance, and flight operations solutions.

“Aery has enjoyed the partnership with the Newport News community and airport staff over the last four years,” said Aery Aviation Executive Vice President Scott Beale. “Their collective support and pro-business environment persuaded Aery to invest more than $15 million into the construction, expansion, and upfit of the buildings for this new state-of-the-art facility, which also includes an investment in machinery, tools, furniture, fixtures, and business personal property. Aery is happy to call Newport News its home for decades to come.”

Northam’s office says Virginia beat out Maryland, Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia for the project.

Beale says they’ll break ground next week and then it’ll take about 10 to 12 months to complete.
